The rumors have been piling up over the past few months, but they’ve now been officially confirmed. Andy Samberg will no longer be on “Saturday Night Live” following the comedian’s seven seasons on the show.
On the season finale of “Saturday Night Live”, Andy Samberg hinted he will not be returning with the show for an eighth season. New York Times writes that it was a rapping session with Chris Parnell that made it clear Andy Samberg was calling it quits with the show. “On these New York streets I hone my fake rap penmanship/ That’s how it began, and that’s how I’m – a finish it”.
In a phone interview taken last Friday, the comedian said: “It’s an incredibly emotional and strange moment in my life. Obviously it’s not a huge shock, but I did officially decide not to come back”.
The media gossips that Andy Samberg’s departure was most likely decided by Kristen Wiig’s departure from the show. As Samberg himself states, it looks the rumors were justified. Samberg said that Wiig “kept saying it just feels like it’s her time. I connect with that. Something about it just feels like it’s the moment. My contract’s up and I did so much more than I ever thought I would ever even do”.
Only two days before the official announcement, E! News talked with Andy Samberg about a potential departure from NBC’s “Saturday Night Live”. He then said he didn’t take a decision yet, but added it would “definitely be weird” not returning for the next season. “I’m not sure I can imagine [not being a part of it] yet or not. That was always my dream job, so I feel really lucky to have worked there at all” explained the comedian for E! News.
For the moment being, NBC did not make any comments regarding Andy Samberg’s departure. However, Samberg remains optimistic that he will collaborate every now and then with “Saturday Night Live”. “That’s the kind of thing that I really do hope happens” said the comedian adding that “hopefully things will work out well enough that they’ll want me”.
